Photoshop has recognized authority in photo editing field. It is the best but very expensive software for photo professionals.
It is very difficult to write about one of the best software in the whole field. Photoshop have been on the market for a long time. Most of professionals choose the program to work with photo images or bitmap images. Photoshop allows you to make the images much better. You may hide artifacts or add effects; you may get rid of noise or make image sharpen. You can do with imager whether you want and even more :).
I use the program not often because it is very powerful for me. I need some easy features that can be found in free or much cheaper photo editing software. The program loads too long and costs too much for me. I do not have enough money to buy the program. That's why I used the program on my work only.
Adobe Systems has another product - Adobe Elements which has much less features and costs much less money. This program was created for home users who are not a professional in the photo editing. But the program has too small amount of features for me. In this case I would prefer to use free counterparts.
Ubuntu 9.04
It is cool looking and easy to use Linux for home users. It is my favorite Linux distributive.
I'm a PC :), but I like Ubuntu Linux from Canonical. I use Ubuntu as my home server where I could test my network software and develop WEB sites. Linux is not my favorite OS and I will not use it as everyday solution in the near future, but I think it is good solution. I couldn't resist from downloading the latest version of Ubuntu 9.04.
I was thinking for a long time where to place this review because I didn't have a section where to place OS or Linux software. I decided to create a new section named Linux. I think I will write about the OS and Linux software in the future.
Linux 9.04 based on Gnome 2.26 and Kernel 2.6.28-11.37 (which based on 2.6.28.8). That's all for me and Ubuntu 9.04. There are no stunning features in the new release and there is no anything to talk about. I like Ubuntu but I think the 9.04 is not a new version. It must be named Ubuntu 8.10 SP1.
If Canonical work on the Ubutnu 10 like they worked on 9.04 or 8.10, the next version will fall down. Developers from Microsoft work well and we see their work. Not all solutions we like, but no one could say that Vista is a XP SP5. Windows Vista is a Windows Vista and nothing less. I hope Ununtu 10 would be much better then 9.04. I'm waiting for something stunning.
Ubuntu 9.04 is sill a good Linux distributive but I strongly believe it might be better.

I don't like instant messaging programs, but my wife like them all. She has 4 programs that start with windows and she talk with her friends for the whole days. She can talk with deferent peoples in the instant messaging programs at the same time. I can't understand how she does it. Me favorite program to talk with my friends is Windows Live Mail. I like to use mail client when I have spare time and do not like when the messages distract me.
But Skype – is the program I want to have. My parents live too far from me. It is too expensive to call them using phone calls. The Skype calls are much cheaper way to have video chats with my parents. In the holidays we run Skype and call to my parents. The video chats may last for the whole day. We are talking and playing in the games in the Internet.
Latest version of the program is 4.0. The program became much easier and reliable in comparison with previous version. The user interface is pretty and easy to use. My 5 years old sun uses the program without problem. He can call to grandmother or grandfather any time. My sun can not read or write but he do not need it to use Skype. He likes to play with the games in the Skype program with my mom.
I haven't made any test but my experience tells me that Skype uses one of the best the video chat engine. It allows me to have video calls on bad connection when ICQ 6.0 can not start video.
In my opinion Skype has only one week spot – file transferring. The file transferring speed is very slow if the firewall is enabled on one of the connected computers. I don’t understand the reasons because the program sends and receives audio and video data without problem despite firewalls.
Paint.NET 3.36
It is an excellent image and photo editing software for home users who don't need advanced features.
The first version of the Paint.NET was released a long time ago. It was easy but became popular too fast. The source codes of the program were open and program was promoting by Microsoft's employees. Paint.NET 1.0 was really good. Microsoft used the product as .NET platform advertise. Yes! Paint.NET is written for .NET Framework and works fast, that is why this graphics editor is very good example to advertise the platform.
The source codes are not available now but the program got very popular image and photo editor. I use it instead Adobe Photoshop in my everyday work. Adobe Photoshop is the best graphic and photo editing software, but it is very expensive for me. Most of us do not need advanced features of Photoshop. Paint.NET is quite useful in most cases.
What do I like in Paint.NET?
- The program supports layers. It is very useful when you make WEB page layout in graphic editing program.
- It has all basic and some advanced filters (blurring, sharpening, red-eye removal, distortion, noise, and embossing) to correct your photo.
- The program uses very fast and high quality compression filters when you save you images in PNG or JPEG format. I use Paint.NET to make images and prepare screenshots for all my web sites.
- Easy-to-use .interface. Every feature and user interface element was designed to be intuitive and quickly learnable.
- Paint.NET includes simple tools for drawing shapes, including an easy-to-use curve tool for drawing splines or Bezier curves.
- The program supports 9 languages
All images on my 10 WEB sites are saved in Paint.NET. I like the size/quality ratio of the images and screenshots. When you select the save image command a saving dialog box will be displayed. In the dialog box you will see a small preview of the image quality that will be saved. You may change image properties and see the result in real time.
The latest version available on the site is 3.36. The version has not changed for a long time. I hope we will see a new version in the near future. I hope the new version will be much better, with new features.
The weakest point of the program is working with text. Text tools might be better. It is not a piece of critic, it is a wish. If you were not a professional developer you would like the program.

I had stored my notes and minds in different files and programs before I met Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. I long time ago I even wrote my own program to organize my notes. I had no time to support this program and develop new feature and I stopped the project. I have had one place only for all kind of my notes since I bought Office 2007. I think that the OneNote program is incredible. It is powerful and easy to use.
One of the weak spot of the program is slow startup process. The program starts to slow for this kind of programs. I think notes managers have to start as fast as possible. But this spot is not critical. You may press Win+N buttons to create a quick note. The small OneNote windows will be displayed where you can write your note. The window displays very quickly. Quick notes are stored to special OneNote chapter for unsorted minds. In the spare time you may start full version of the program and sort your quick notes to appropriate folders.
OneNote allows you to draw in your notes and record voice messages. The program will be useful for users who have tablet PC.
TortoiseSVN 1.5.9
It is a nice and easy-to-use interface for open source SVN named SubVersion. The program controls your source code files changes.
I had searched for powerful SVN for a long time. I used to use Microsoft VSS, but the program from MS is old-fashioned. Another product from Microsoft - Visual Studio Team System is very expensive. I can't afford to buy the program.
A week ago one of my readers advised me to try TortoiseSVN. TortoiseSVN is an interface for the well known open source project - SubVersion. SubVersion is a very difficult to use SVN product. I do not have a time to learn how to use the program. I need the product that will be powerful but easy to use. I was ready to pay reasonable money for the suitable product. But I haven't paid a cent because I found TortoiseSVN.
TortoiseSVN is an absolutely free-of-charge product. You don't have to pay money to use the program.
Let's have a look at the program and how to use it. The installation process is easy. Just start the setup file and click the Next button several times. You will not see any program in the Start menu after the installation is completed. I was in shock! TortoiseSVN integrates in the system shell menu. Right click on any file in your file system and you will see TortoiseSVN menu section.
First of all we have to create a repository where our source code files will live. To do it create a new folder on your hard disk (c:\repository for example). Do not put any files in the folder because it must be empty.
Right click on the folder and select the TortoiseSVN | Create repository here menu item. The program will create a new repository for your source code files in the selected folder. Open the c:\repository folder and you will see some new subfolders and files within it. They were created by TortoiseSVN. Do not delete or edit the files or folders directly.
Now you can place your source code files in the repository. Right click on any folder and select the TortoiseSVN | Repo Browser menu item. A repository selection dialog box will be appeared. You may have several repository folders in your system. Select the repository you have just created and press OK. A repository browser window will be displayed. You may drag&drop your files or folder to the window to place in to the repository.
We are ready to work with the files from the repository. Right click on the folder you want to use to store files from repository (c:\editing for example) and select the SVN Checkout menu item. A dialog box will be displayed where you may select repository you want to check out. Check out the needed files and work with them in the directory c:\editing. Right click on the changed file and select the SVN Update and SVN Commit to save changes in the repository.

Mocrosoft Office for Home and Students 2007
In my opinion Microsoft Office is the best software packet for home and office. MS Word and MS Excel do not have a real competitor.
I have tested several office packages (free, commercial and open source). I think that Microsoft Office 2007 is the best package for home users and commercial company. Microsoft does not pay to me. This is my independent opinion. I had searched for alternative package for a long time, but I couldn't find something comfortable and easy to use. I will not describe other packages because we are talking about Microsoft Office.
I'm working in the text editor most of my work and spare time. My favorite editors are Visual Studio and Microsoft Word. Visual Studio 2008 used to write code and Microsoft Word used to write books, articles and posts for my web sites. I need the best text editor to be productive.
The face of Microsoft Office products was changed significantly. The new ribbon panels look great. The first time I saw the Word 2007 I was stunned. I felt uncomfortable. I felt lost. I couldn't find commands I needed because I used to work with menus and classic toolbars. But after two days I got accustomed to new Ribbon panels. I think it is an excellent improvement in the Office product.
Despite the size of the programs they start quickly. Microsoft Office products are very big but work excellent. I think that Microsoft’s developers made the greatest work. The main window of the text editor or spreadsheet appears almost instantly.
A new file format (docx) is optimized too. The files spend less space on the disk. That’s why I use it for all my documents. I hope the support of this document format will be integrated in all text editors (I hope).
I bought Microsoft Office Home and Students about a half year ago. The license of the product allows me to install programs on three computers. It's great because I have exactly three computers at home :). In my opinion it is the best software package. I recommend you to buy Microsoft Office if you work with text or spreadsheets every day.

Today I'm going to talk about another program from CyD Software Labs - Careful Observer - Network Monitor. The program allows you to monitor availability of computers in your network. Availability monitoring is a common task for network administrators. You can monitor any remote host port in your or remote network according to the specified testing plan.
If you are network administrator you have to respond on the problems in your network as soon as possible. CyD Careful Observer - Network Monitor allows you to catch network messages. The program can send you e-mail address when specified host in your network got down or got alive.
Network Monitor can test not only the host availability. You may configure the program to test services on any computer or server. All you have to do is specify the computer address, service port and testing interval. The program will test the service availability every xxx seconds. xxx is a value you set in the interval property.
Careful Observer - Network Monitor is very powerful and easy-to-use program. The price is reasonable to buy the program by administrators of any size network.
Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 8.0 RC
The most popular WEB browser in the world. Every Windows computer has Internet Explorer.
Two days ago I downloaded Internet Explorer 8. I had been resisting to installing the beta version for a long time. Two days ago I decided to try IE 8 RC. A browser is very important for me. The browser program is working the whole day. But the IE 7 works not stable. If the site is bad the program will crash.
Internet Explorer 8 complies with the WEB standards. Installing the programs gives me a new opportunity to test my WEB sites on the conformability. An IE 8 engine was changed significantly. It means that some WEB sites might be visualized incorrectly if the sites do not follow standards. I installed the new version and checked my WEB sites. There are no errors!! It means that I'm a great designer and great developer :). One of my web sites looks in IE 8 much better then in IE7 (Hackish Code).
What about stability? The new version is much better. I have had only two accidents with Google Analytics. The browser page crashed and restarted. I want to emphasize: the only crashed page was restarted not the whole browser. The old version has problems with the Google Analytics web site too but IE 7 crashes all pages and all browser windows. It doesn't happen every time but it happens. I think the source of the problem in the Flash that visualizes graphics, but I'm not sure.
May be I'm lucky but I have met the only one WEB site that looks in Internet Explorer 8 incorrectly. But the problem solves without problems. There is a button in the right side of the address bar. Press the button to use IE 7 engine to visualize the page:
You don't have to press the button every time. The browser remembers your choice. Every time you load pages from the server the browser will use the old engine. The choice will be remembered until the page structure is changed to suit web standards.
What about user interface? It looks like Internet Explorer but a little better. Menu items have small icons that look excellent. The icons will not make your life better or easier, but it looks well. There are some Live Services commands integrated to the menu page:
- Blog with windows live – allows you to copy the current page title to the Windows Live blog record compose window.
- E-Mail with Windows Live – send the page using Windows Live mail.
- Translate with Windows Live – it is an excellent feature if you browse foreign language pages.
It's very useful for Windows Live users.
What about security. It is a very difficult question. I can't test Internet Explorer on vulnerabilities but I can describe new feature. The new browser features are in the Safity menu. There are next menu items:
- InPrivate Browsing – allows you to browse web sites privately. The browser do not sent to web server information that allows to remote system associate you to the information. It is an excellent feature for end users but it's bad for analytics for the site owners.
- Delete browsing history - allows you to quickly clear browsing history. Children will appreciate the feature :). They will be able to quickly cover their tracks.
I haven't understand a new feature – slices, but I'm going to find advantages of the slices.
WinRar 3.8
WinRAR is a powerful archive manager. It can backup your data and reduce the size of email attachments, decompress RAR, ZIP and other files downloaded from Internet and create new archives in RAR and ZIP file format.
WinRar is the best archive manager for me. Rar archive has excellent compression ratio. In most cases it is much better than the most popular zip archive format. But I do not use this archive manager. Why? Because I like to use Total Commander file manager that support ZIP format using internal libraries and rar archives using external libraries. The external libraries look bad (shows information in the black-screen window).
The WinRar program looks great. It allows you to choose themes with excellent drawn buttons.
RatLab Company has one of the worst web sites. The web design of the program web site is the worst part of the program. In other hand the program has excellent design. Why developer can't afford professional web design?
